Problematic use of pornography being an actual behavioral addiction is controversial. However, research has shown through brain scans, the same reward centers in the brain are activated in pornography users as individuals who are addicted to substances. This is why many individuals who have experienced difficulty controlling their online sexual behavior show similar signs as those who have problems abusing substances, i.e., spending large amounts of time engaging in the behavior, difficulty trying to stop despite repeated attempts to do so, increasing urges or cravings, requiring increasing amounts or different types of pornography, keeping use a secret, losing interest in other life activities, etc.
